October 1 Hollywood Live! Benefit Insight for The Blind
The Pompano Beach Cultural Center is proud to host a dazzling evening of entertainment to benefit Insight for the Blind. “Hollywood Live!” directed by Shari Upbin, features an all-star cast and showcases some of the most beloved songs from the Silver Screen from the 1940s on. Proceeds from the event will allow Insight for the Blind, serving all of South Florida, to continue promoting literacy within the visually impaired community through the recording of Talking Books, a program of the Library of Congress. “We are thrilled to present this star-studded event as a way to increase awareness and support for our organization,” said Matt Corey, CEO of Insight for the Blind. “Our fundraising efforts allow us to create recorded books for our sight-challenged community at no cost to them.” The Hollywood Live! is produced and directed by Shari Upbin, who has staged this show with a variety of casts in New York and South Florida through her company Sharell Productions. For this event, a who’s who of theatre greats will be in the spotlight including Jeffrey Bruce, Lindsey Corey, Laura Hodos, Michael Focas, Amy Tanner, Mark Sanders and Sandi Stock, with musical and band direction by Caryl Fantel, Roy Fantel and Ruppert Zwienski. “Hollywood Live features a wealth of songs and juicy stories,” explained Upbin. “We will be recreating classic clips from famed MGM musicals and sharing some fascinating tinsel town tales as well. This show was declared a “joy to behold,” by Cabaret Magazine and the event will be the perfect opportunity for the audience to experience a spectacular evening while supporting one of the most worthwhile organizations.”

October 19 Theater: The Christians
Winner of the 2016 Outer Critics Circle Award, The Christians is a complex, multi-layered exploration of faith, belief and the seemingly insurmountable distance that separates us. “This play, while set in a Protestant Christian church, creates a dialogue that transcends religion, and is incredibly poignant at this time in our nation,” said Skye Whitcomb, Outré’s Artistic Director and the director of the production. “The thing that strikes me most about The Christians is that for all the struggle that the characters go through, there is no ‘bad guy.’ Every one of these characters is coming from a place of personal truth, of belief, and they struggle with reconciling the differences in their beliefs. There’s this heartbreaking distance between them that tugs at the soul. And one of the most wrenching questions that the play forces us to contemplate is what we should do when those we love believe something that is not only different from what we believe, but believe something that we feel is actually dangerous.”
